Join us for two days of festivities in Downtown Lynchburg as we honor the heritage of the river and commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence with this year’s theme: “Forward to Freedom.” \nThe Batteau Launch Party\nFriday\, June 19 | 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM Music Begins: 6:30 Location: Percival’s Island Kick off the weekend with live music and local food. This community gathering is the perfect way to gear up for the official launch\, featuring a concert atmosphere right along the banks of the river. \nOfficial Batteau Launch & Forward to Freedom Celebration\nSaturday\, June 20 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM Location: Riverfront Park\, the Riverwalk Trail\, and Percival’s Island Witness the iconic departure of the batteaux as they begin their journey down the James. This year’s celebration explores the theme of “Forward to Freedom\,” featuring historical reenactors\, artisans\, and educators. \nStroll along the Riverwalk Trail to experience: \n\nLiving History: Meet period-accurate demonstrators and artisans showcasing traditional crafts.\nRiver Stewardship: Visit with local educators and organizations dedicated to the mission of protecting and enjoying the James River.\nThe Launch: Head to the water’s edge at Percival’s Island to cheer on the crews as the authentic tobacco boat replicas take to the current.\nUltimate Air Dogs: Stop by to watch dogs leap from a 20-foot dock into the pool\, or register your own water-loving pup to participate.\n\nAbout the Batteau Festival\nThe James River Batteau Festival is an annual eight-day voyage from Lynchburg to Maidens\, Virginia. It preserves the history of the traditional shallow-draft boats that were once the primary mode of transporting goods—primarily tobacco—along the James River. Celebrate with us as we commemorate a dual milestone—America’s 250th and JRA’s 50th! Thank you to Presenting Sponsor E. Claiborne Robins Jr. for making this series possible! \nBob Deans\, author of The River Where America Began: A Journey Along the James\, will offer fresh perspectives on a cherished story and answer audience questions.  “Bob Deans started out in the news business when he was ten years old\, delivering his hometown paper\, the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He spent three decades as a reporter for The Post & Courier of Charleston\, S.C.\, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution\, including four years as Chief Asia Correspondent\, based in Tokyo\, and eight years covering the White House. He’s a former president of the White House Correspondents’ Association and author of the nonfiction book\, The River Where America Began: A Journey Along the James. His debut novel is The Bicycle Man. Bob is married to the artist and children’s book author Karen Deans. They live in Bethesda\, Maryland\, and have three grown children.”\n \nThe lecture will be followed by a cocktail reception\, hors d’oeuvres\, and a spectacular view of the SailFest 250 Richmond fireworks from our riverfront location\, 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. \nTickets are $76 per attendee ($80.56 with fees). SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit: The James and Other Waters
DESCRIPTION:From July 17-August 30\, The Bond Millen Gallery in Richmond will feature the work of artist B. Millner with an exhibit called “The James and Other Waters.”  The artist\, in collaboration with the gallery\, will donate 50% of the proceeds from sales of this exhibit to JRA. \nThe Bond Millen Gallery will also host an exhibit opening reception on Thursday\, July 17th from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. with the opportunity to meet and speak with B. Milner. \nParking is minimal at this location. We recommend parking along Rio Vista Lane or utilizing the St. Catherine’s parking lot and walking across Cary Street.
