What James River animal are you?Atlantic SturgeonYou’re an Atlantic Sturgeon. And that’s pretty cool, because your appearance has changed little since the age of dinosaurs. You can grow up to 14 feet in length, weigh 800 pounds, and can live 60 years. But sturgeon in Virginia haven’t always been that lucky. Fortunately, the James River Association has been instrumental in restoring your population since you were overfished. Since 2010 three experimental spawning reefs have been constructed in the James River downriver of Richmond in an attempt to restore your population. And despite your hard, exterior shell, you’re sweet on the inside (especially with a little melted butter). You also play an essential ecological role as both a predator and prey for many species. While your numbers had experienced a steep decline decades ago due to pollution and human development, you’re making a comeback thanks to investments made by the James River Association to restore water quality in the James River and across the Chesapeake Bay. With continued restoration and sustainable management of your commercial harvest, your species will be resilient long into the future. Despite being “follically-challenged,” your razor-sharp talons, six-foot wingspan and agile hunting skills make you one of Virginia’s most impressive birds of prey. In 1977, only 33 pairs of bald eagles could be found in the state, none of which resided in the James River watershed. Since then, you’ve have made an incredible return, with nearly 302 breeding pairs documented in 2019. In addition to being delicious with a squeeze of lemon and glass of bubbly, you’re also a keystone species for the James River and the Chesapeake Bay ecosystems. Before European colonization, you formed miles and miles of reefs in the Chesapeake Bay and were responsible for filtering countless millions of gallons of water. Today, you still help clean the James and your numbers can indicate a change in water quality conditions. It’s why the James River Association includes you in our State of the James report, as well as our list of favorite river critters. To learn more visit thejamesriver.org. American MinkYou’re cute. You’re furry. You’re an American Mink! With your friendly and quirky personality, you like to hunt and frolic in small groups throughout the James—especially at night. Your elongated, agile body means you can swim, gallop and climb trees like a pro. And fun fact: When you’re happy, you purr like a cat! And while that’s not quite talking, it’s okay. Because the James River Association serves as your voice, advocating for a healthy habitat at the local, state and even federal level.
