Explore Nature and History along the Willis and James Rivers

Join local conservationists, students from Cumberland High School, river lovers, and history buffs to get to know the Willis River! This hidden gem flows through Cumberland County, Virginia and is surrounded by beautiful streamside forests and a unique history.
9am-12:00pm – We’ll start the day on the banks of the Willis and James Rivers to learn about the history of batteaux and the lock systems, the trees and vegetation that call its banks home, and how we can play a part in improving the quality of its waters. All attendees will enjoy a BBQ chicken lunch. Registration cap is 50 participants.
Noon- 1:00pm – Lunch and Raffle
1:00-4:00pm – Enjoy a beginner friendly ~3.5 mile float along the Willis River. Along the float we will stop to explore old lock ruins and practice identifying trees along its banks. Canoes and/or kayaks will be provided by the James River Association. Registration cap is 25 participants and all must be over 16 years old.
