James River Association Programs

What We Do

The James River Association is the only organization devoted solely to the protection of the James River. Throughout the James River’s 10,000-square mile watershed,  we work through our core programs:

  • Advocacy
  • Education
  • Community Conservation
  • Watershed Restoration

Our mission is to be a guardian of the James River. We provide a voice for the river and take action to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of its natural resources.  We monitor the river, respond to problems, seek policy changes, and implement on-the-ground projects to restore the river’s health. We protect through our Watershed Restoration, James Riverkeeper, and River Advocacy programs. We also help communities benefit from the river by increasing river access, supporting river-related events, and implementing volunteer projects. We connect through our Environmental Education and Community Conservation programs.

We work with local, state and federal lawmakers to ensure the health of the James River.

The Riverkeeper serves as the eyes, ears, and voice of the James River and its tributaries.

We connect youth with river-based learning that inspire the next generation of river stewards.

Watershed Restoration

Our partnerships bring responsible habitat restoration & conservation solutions for everyone.

Community Conservation

We help communities realize the benefits of a healthy James River and promote protecting it.
