You helped us usher this bill through the Senate of Virginia, and now that it has crossed over to the House of Delegates we need your help again!
Senate Bill 1398 is an important piece of legislation that will ensure responsible and safe closure of coal ash ponds in Virginia. It passed the Senate with a bi-partisan showing of support on February 7th, 2017. The bill is now before the House Agriculture Subcommittee and will be voted on the afternoon of Monday, February 13th.
Recent water monitoring by the James River Association has uncovered toxic pollutants including arsenic, lead and chromium seeping into public waterways that border Dominion’s Chesterfield Power Station. According to Dominion’s own monitoring data, toxic contamination has occurred at the Chesterfield, Bremo and Chesapeake Power Stations where unlined coal ash ponds are leaking pollutants into groundwater.
We urgently need your help. In order to find a long-term solution for these leaking coal ash ponds, problems must be well understood now. SB 1398 would require detailed identification of ongoing pollution, cleanup measures and options for safe closure practices to protect our waterways.
Please contact legislators today and ask them to support SB 1398.
