If you have a septic system on your property, do you remember the last time you had it pumped and inspected? If it’s been over 5 years (or you can’t remember) then it’s probably been too long! It is suggested that you have it pumped every 3-5 years under normal use.
If you wait until there is a problem, like sluggish pipes, odors, or a soggy yard, it may be too late for a simple fix. Proper care is essential to keep your septic system functioning correctly. Malfunctioning septic systems can lead to excess nutrients and wastewater entering the ground water and/or surface water, which is a threat to the health of our streams and rivers, as well as the health of you and your neighbors.
Good news for many residents within the James River watershed, there are programs available to help you!
- Thanks to one of our River Hero Home partners, Stamie E Lyttle Co., River Hero Home members receive $10 off the cost of a septic system cleaning/inspection and Stamie Lyttle will also make a matching $10 contribution to the James River Association!
- Several Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Districts offer Septic Financial Assistance Program to help citizens with the cost of pump-outs, repairs, and replacements. Check with your local SWCD to see if this is a possibility.
