James RiverRats Volunteer Program
Join our RiverRats volunteer program to patrol the James River. Protect Virginia’s waterways by reporting pollution and tracking local wildlife today!
The James River Association invites you to join our River Rats volunteer program. Essentially, our volunteers serve as the first line of defense for the river. Because you know your local waterways best, your patrols help us identify pollution and potential threats that could harm the river. Additionally, we provide all the training and tools you need. As a result, you can make a real difference in Virginia’s environment just by being on the water.
We provide extensive support, so a scientific background is not required. By keeping watch over our waterways, River Rats play a vital role in protecting and restoring the James River.
What Does a River Rat Do
River Rats are trained volunteers who "adopt" a section of the river or a local tributary.
While you are out paddling, boating, or walking the banks, you will document conditions and report concerns directly to the James RIVERKEEPER®.
In addition to regular patrols, our members participate in “Action Projects.” These projects range from tracking the ancient Atlantic Sturgeon with researchers to organizing local river cleanups. By keeping watch over our waterways, River Rats play a vital role in protecting and restoring America’s Founding River.
Do I need a scientific background?
No. We provide extensive training and support, so a scientific background is not required. Furthermore, we welcome anyone with a passion for the James River to apply.
What is the time commitment?
We ask that our River Rats commit to at least three river patrols per year. Also, many of our members choose to complete one community action project annually. Since the schedule is flexible, you can complete your patrols whenever it fits your lifestyle.
Do I need my own boat?
While many River Rats patrol by kayak or boat, it is not a requirement. In fact, many of our volunteers monitor neighborhood streams and riverbanks on foot.
How Do I Get Started
First, you must attend a River Rat training session. Once you have completed your training, you will gain access to the private River Rat portal to submit your reports.
