Volunteer to help us plant 3,000 trees this spring!

The James River Association, in partnership with the Robert E Lee and Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation Districts, will be planting 3,000 trees at farms along various tributaries of the James River this spring!

If you love our River, join us to protect the James by volunteering to help plant the native tree seedlings.

The plantings are at various properties within Albemarle, Amherst, and Nelson Counties. Many of these farms have also installed cattle exclusion fencing to keep cows out of our waterways, which reduces sediment and bacteria from entering the James River, and keeps the cows healthy and safe.

All tools and instruction will be provided and you will be working  alongside our staff to install native tree seedlings. All ages are welcome, but youth under age 18 should have a parent or guardian present, and participants will need to be comfortable being outside for several hours, traverse uneven ground, and handle a good amount of walking.

In return, we’ll help you connect to the James to celebrate what we accomplished together for a paddle and lunch at James River Adventures in Amherst County!

Interested in volunteering? Sign up here for a shift, or just to stay in the loop about days and locations this March. The plantings are on private property and site locations could shift depending on weather and other factors, so exact locations will not be released until closer to the planting date.
