Every time it rains, fertilizers, herbicides, bacteria from pet waste, and chemicals flow from our properties into local waterways. This pollution can make it unsafe for people and wildlife. The James River Association created the River Hero Home program to celebrate individuals who take steps to improve their home, pledge to take action for the James and become a hero for our community and our river. Becoming a River Hero Home is a simple way to help protect the James River to ensure its health and enjoyment for future generations.
We are highlighting our River Heroes so that you can #MeetOurHeroes and hear firsthand how they’re making a BIG difference for our river!
Amber Garcia is a River Hero Home member who has installed several rain barrels and uses them to support her native gardens!
Josiah and I have purchased three rain barrels from the James River Association, and hope to add a few more this year. One feeds the drip irrigation system to our 100% native rain garden in the backyard, and the others feed our pollinator garden and vegetable beds. We’re on a learning curve for sure and have loved the guidance of the River Hero Homes program. The principles are easy to follow and the reward is a beautiful river right in our neighborhood. This fall we’re looking forward to replacing some of our front lawn with natives and propagating cuttings for planting next spring. So many thanks to the James River Association for the wonderful resources and programs they provide to our community!
