The James River Association (JRA) had a strong Spring planting season!
JRA regularly incorporates these A’s into our programs: Awareness, Appreciation, Action, and Advocacy. In response to the COVID 19 pandemic we’ve had to add another “A” into our work: Adaptation. JRA was able to adapt our business as usual like many of you, which allowed us to still complete our streamside forest restoration work this spring! Over 29,000 trees were planted on 75 acres of riparian buffers along waterways in Amherst, Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna and Nelson Counties.
With social distancing easily practiced in the field, Conservation Services, Inc. and their dedicated crew planted over 28,000 seedlings over a span of 2 weeks! Although we were not able to employ the help of volunteers this season, JRA staff from both the Watershed Restoration and Education Teams pulled together to install 227 trees on two farms in Albemarle County. We were also able to perform maintenance on buffers installed last year to make sure all of those trees have the best chance to keep growing! Maintenance includes things like straightening any fallen tree shelters, clipping vines from around the tubes, and replanting where needed.
