The inauguration of our Upper James River Education Center marked an unforgettable experience, with 28 enthusiastic students from Rustburg High School setting the stage for an inspiring day of exploration along the banks of the James River. Led by our dedicated education team, students delved into three captivating lessons: unraveling the secrets of the river’s composition, gaining a hands-on understanding of its ecological health, and connecting classroom knowledge to the vibrant ecosystems outside our doors.
This immersive educational experience not only showcased the remarkable features of our state-of-the-art classrooms but also allowed students to witness the dynamic interplay of science and nature. As Rustburg High School students engaged with the river environment, the Upper James River Education Center became a hub for discovery and learning.
Our commitment to environmental education extends beyond the classroom, exemplified by the transformed facility featuring cutting-edge classrooms and interactive tools. During the grand opening, 42 students from Brookville High School embarked on a field experience, exploring the facility’s enhanced features, including a covered patio with expansive river views. An outdoor pavilion overlooking the picturesque James River and downtown Lynchburg is an innovative classroom for larger groups and all-weather adventures.
The entire River Center campus reflects our dedication to environmental consciousness, offering opportunities for hands-on learning in energy and water conservation, rain gardens, and native landscaping. A trail and river landing, developed with Amherst County, enhances access to beginner-friendly paddling conditions, fostering environmental education and public programs.
Charles Johnson, Upper James Education Manager for JRA, emphasized the center’s milestone in environmental education.
