Picnic and Paddle on the Slate River
Buckingham, VA
April 30, 2022 • 9:00am-3:00pm

Join local conservationists, students from Buckingham High School, river lovers, and history buffs to get to know the Slate River! This hidden gem flows through Buckingham County, Virginia and is surrounded by beautiful streamside forests and a unique history.

9am-12:30pm – We’ll start the day on the banks of the Slate River to learn about the history of batteaux and the lock systems, the trees and vegetation that call its banks home, and how we can play a part in improving the quality of its waters. All attendees will enjoy a BBQ chicken lunch made by members of the Arvonia Fire Department. Registration cap is 40 participants.

12:30-3:00pm – Enjoy a beginner friendly 4 mile float tour along the Slate River. Along the float we will stop to explore old lock ruins and practice identifying trees along its banks. Canoes and/or kayaks will be provided by the James River Association. Registration cap is 20 participants and all must be over 16 years old.
