The James River Association is honored to partner with the Capital Region Land Conservancy (CRLC) to acquire historic Malvern Hill. We began working with CRLC in 2016 to acquire Malvern Hill, a property consisting of approximately 900 acres in Henrico and Charles City Counties. The property is notable for its historic significance and natural resources, including a tributary of the James River named Turkey Island Creek.
The James River Association is a champion of public access on Turkey Island Creek via the Malvern Hill property. Following the successful acquisition of Malvern Hill, we intend to establish public access on Turkey Island Creek. The proposed project will feature a canoe launch and provide needed access to the James River, James River Ecology School at Presquile National Wildlife Refuge, Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, and Virginia Capital Trail. The proposed access site is supported by plans including the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Access Plan and James River Segment Plan.
CRLC is scheduled to close on Malvern Hill on May 31, 2017 and has secured $2.2 million of the the $6.6 million needed to purchase the property. If you are interested in supporting the project, please contact the Capital Region Land Conservancy.
